Luna Redux by OtakuSquirrel Luna Redux by OtakuSquirrel
At the beginning of the year, one of my projects was to do a sculpt for Season 2 Luna with the new Princess Celestia Toy. She was actually one of my top priorities, but my motivation to complete the project really disappeared when the photos of the new Princess Cadence toy started popping up... which would be a much better sculpt to represent Luna-- and there's already been at least one picture of a prototype Luna that uses that sculpt.

So, now that I've managed to get my hands on a Cadence-- I thought that it might be fun to spend a bit of time (basically this morning) on the start of my new Luna sculpt. So here are my two Luna sculpts as they currently stand.

A few things to note in the picture...
My de-haired Celestia was temporarily misplaced during the move into the new office. So another Celestia is filling in-- which is why she has hair under the WIP mane. I may try to salvage this mane for using with Celestia or NMM-- but I have no idea how possible that'll actually be until I make my usual montage of screen-caps.

The base for Luna's tail is hiding there in the background between Shining Armor and Cadence.

And yes, Shining Armor is prepped for some fun also-- I'm not all that thrilled that he had a carpet glued to his head, but whatever. I very much doubt I'm going to do the sculpt for SA first-- I'll probably do something a bit more fun beforehand.

Anyway, I'm just toying with these sculpts right at the moment. I just got my new Legos to help with the mold making, so I'm hoping to get the molds for the CMC finally set up today, if not poured. I've really dilly-dallied way too long getting those done.

*sighs* Hasbro, how the hell could you possibly miscolor Celestia?

I'm hoping their sculpts had a good chance to dry last night... I'm going to be pouring those molds pretty quick now. =)

Also, I find it hilarious that Pinklestia is actually the color Cadence should be (including her lavender tipped wings), but Hasbro somehow managed to make her actual toy too dark.

LOL! I didn't get him off eBay-- I traded for him.

Cadence has a new head sculpt, so it doesn't seem like it would... at least not without a lot of modding.

Ah...because there are some sets of the two floating on eBay... >.>

Dang it XP I guess I'd have to either get another Cadence or not have a sculpted Luna :meow:

There's already been a leaked photo of a Luna prototype using the Cadence sculpt, so she'll be coming along soon enough anyway, and you wont have to completely paint over all that pink. ;)

Well, at this point I'm going easy on the sculpting-- these are just side projects... What I'm really trying to do is get moving on the prep for the new stuff and mane six alike, so that I'll have product to actually take with me to the con. =P

Pretty neat! Its nice to finally see Hasbro putting more variety in their product sculpts!

Shining Armor doesn't look too happy about the whole thing though... ^^;

That would be nice. Doubt it will happen, since Shining Armor is the only male pony they've made (and he's an exclusive...)

Although, I wonder what would happen if you took Shining Armor, removed his horn, and gave him the proper mane and accessories...

I haven't seen too many pictures of the mold, so I really don't know.

Big Mac is very rounded and has a large/muscular rear-end and back legs, but the Shining Armor sculpt has a very powerful looking chest that tapers off into a small rear-end, and is also very angular... Same goes for the faces-- Big Mac has a rounded face and Shining Armor has an angular face.
So even if you painted the toy Red and gave him the proper mane and accessories, he wouldn't look anywhere near correct. =(

I kinda figured that. I guess you can make a Prince Blueblood from him...
:icondashiediscouragedplz:

He looks too... "herioc" to be any of the other male background ponies...

His sculpt will also work for Fancy Pants and any of the guard ponies and generic Canterlot Unicorns. So there is potential for the sculpt...

Shining Armor is completely the wrong body-type so make a Big Mac. I know some people out there will try, but I'm going to hold out a big longer hoping that Hasbro will do us right and give us a proper Big Mac.

I just thought about this, but why not take hair out a different way? I seen some customs done where they pop the head off after letting it sit in hot water for a little bit, and just pulling the plugs out through the opening where the head connects to the body with a tweezer o3o

It's a matter of preference I guess. I can chop the hair off a pony with a sharp x-acto knife in about 30 seconds, and I honestly don't see any need to remove any of the remaining hair that's in the pony. The more extensive/invasive method is really done when people want to re-hair the ponies and actually need all that hair and the glue inside removed...

I was wondering why his scalp looked so fuzzy! Does it not use the regular hair tufts in holes? Just... hair glued onto his head??

No, he literally has a piece of shag carpeting glued to his head... Okay, it's not carpeting, but it's a patch of long pile fabric. I guess you could say that he's wearing a rug instead of opting for hair-plugs. ;)

Even worse is that the fabric is set in a recess they made on his head... so unless people are going to re-hair him by buying fake fur, well, it's going to be pretty hard to re-hair him. Him and Cadence also both have the solid bodies, so the tails aren't held in with the washers... so replacing their tails is going to be problematic, which is also irritating.

oh so there's like a fabric with the hair weaved in that's super glued onto the toy? Whyyy XDD. Too bad in pony land rugs seem to be harder to remove than plugs XD

It wasn't too bad to take off-- I pulled it off with my fingers... but it left some glue and loose threads behind. I'm going to hit it with acetone later to see if that'll get the guk off...

There aren't many male unicorns in the show. That's the problem.

Hmmm...There's Fancy Pants, Prince Douchebag Blueblood...can't think of anypony else. I noticed this when looking for vectors of a male unicorn I could alter to fit an image I threw together. [link]

Had to use a vector of some girl's OC. Sad... But it looks good.
