New Pony Sculpts WIP by OtakuSquirrel New Pony Sculpts WIP by OtakuSquirrel
And because I don't already have enough to do... I'm still plucking away at several more sculpts... From left to right we have Sleepy bedhair pony, Lyra, and Derpy. The manes for the bedhair pony and Derpy are pretty much done-- Lyra has a little bit more sculpting to go... and I've very hopeful that I'll be able to have kits ready for Lyra and Derpy in time for EverfreeNW. =)

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering how you make the manes? Obviously with clay, haha, but do you use special tools? I just came across your photo and I really love the concept. ^^ Great job, by the way. They're all looking fantastic.

X-acto knife, sandpaper, and my fingers... Occasioanlly I use a wooden dowel in the place of my fat fingers, but that's really all I'm using. =)

Wow, this is really amazing for such simple tools. I thought maybe you would tell me you used some pretty hardcore and expensive stuff. ^^ I've wanted to try doing something like this for a while, just for personal use, but I always thought I'd need heavy-duty clay tools. Do you use a kiln or is it dry-hardening clay?

It's just sculpey-- I bake it in the over at 275 degrees F. ;) Seriously, nothing fancy here.

Isn't Lyra supposed to have a horn?

Eeyup... I still need to drill out a spot for her horn to be put into... The kit will be similar to Twilight in that her horn will need to be cut off and glued on top of the mane.

You have to glue it on top of the mane!? I thought that was just something you were doing to make the moulding easier!!

Nope. The horns are disproportionately short on the toys to begin with... so to get them sticking out *past* the hair like they should, I went with the chop and reattach option.

Don't interprety it too much-- they are, after all, just toys, and not the phallic representation that some would make them out to be.

I have no idea how you make the manes so smooth and accurate! O:
What do you use?

I somehow knew the far right one was going to be derpy.

Sculpey, an x-acto, and 220 grit sandpaper. =) And lots and lots of time.

Alright, so I'm into my second wave of customs now, and this time I've been trying my best to smooth the sculpts out like you do, but it's really hard. What kind of tools do you use for sanding/carving? Originally I was just using 220 grit sandpaper, but I found it really hard to get to small areas. I found these nifty doublesided sanding pads that work well, but the filly Fluttershy I tested them out on still has some bumps in her mane and tail. :(

I'm basically just using my x-acto knife and the 220 grit sandpaper-- nothing too fancy. I do use the knife to get the sculpts as close to smooth as possible before sanding them-- and I also cut the sandpaper into approximately 1x2 inch pieces, which helps get the small spots also.

I found a set of wood carving tools that work great on the resin! They get into the tight spaces pretty well. Also I can get those bumps pretty well smoothed with the tools then refine them with the sandpaper. I'm pretty clumsy with the x-acto knife and have a bit more control with the wood carving tools. They come in different shapes and sizes.

I'm just using random ponies as sculpting bases. The manes (and eventually tails) are removable and will have silicone molds made for them so I can cast the lots of resin copies.

As soon as it becomes available, I'm SO getting a Derpy kit. You're doing such AWESOME work!

I wonder though... are there any good grey pegasus to use as a base, or am I gonna have to do another "Rainbow Dash Recolor"...

Personally I think Lily Blossom ([link]) would be the closest you could get. She's a muted blue/purple that looks grayish to my eyes. Not exact, but especially with the yellow mane I think she bears a certain resemblance.

I thought about Lily Blossom... interesting to note that she's one of the few ponies not of the "mane 6" that has unique artwork (not a RD or Fluttershy recolor... though with the more recent ones, they've given Lyra and Trixie uniqe art as well.) I also have her blind bag figure and McDonalds toy... I wonder why she's not in the show?

In my eyes, Lily Blossom is just too... purple. If Otaku were to do a Cloud Kicker, I'd think she'd be perfect though.

I think I'm best off picking a stock Pegasus and painting it. I just wish that I could find a nice grey spray paint... my Derpy customs are either too dark or lumpy (from painting by hand).

Ah, well.

Right now there's not any good gray ponies to use as bases... I've actually been holding off on Derpy because of that-- but since I'm going to the con, I figured I'd better go ahead and make a sculpt anyway. =P

She's :iconcatwhitney:'s OC, Sleepy Skies. I'm sharing a table with her at EverfreeNW and she's getting hitched, so it's something of a multi-purpose present.
