New Pony Sculpts WIP by OtakuSquirrel New Pony Sculpts WIP by OtakuSquirrel
And because I don't already have enough to do... I'm still plucking away at several more sculpts... From left to right we have Sleepy bedhair pony, Lyra, and Derpy. The manes for the bedhair pony and Derpy are pretty much done-- Lyra has a little bit more sculpting to go... and I've very hopeful that I'll be able to have kits ready for Lyra and Derpy in time for EverfreeNW. =)

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering how you make the manes? Obviously with clay, haha, but do you use special tools? I just came across your photo and I really love the concept. ^^ Great job, by the way. They're all looking fantastic.

X-acto knife, sandpaper, and my fingers... Occasioanlly I use a wooden dowel in the place of my fat fingers, but that's really all I'm using. =)

Wow, this is really amazing for such simple tools. I thought maybe you would tell me you used some pretty hardcore and expensive stuff. ^^ I've wanted to try doing something like this for a while, just for personal use, but I always thought I'd need heavy-duty clay tools. Do you use a kiln or is it dry-hardening clay?

It's just sculpey-- I bake it in the over at 275 degrees F. ;) Seriously, nothing fancy here.

That's really cool. ^^ I might try it myself. But anyways, they look great!

Isn't Lyra supposed to have a horn?

Eeyup... I still need to drill out a spot for her horn to be put into... The kit will be similar to Twilight in that her horn will need to be cut off and glued on top of the mane.

You have to glue it on top of the mane!? I thought that was just something you were doing to make the moulding easier!!

Nope. The horns are disproportionately short on the toys to begin with... so to get them sticking out *past* the hair like they should, I went with the chop and reattach option.

Well then. That sounds horrifying.
