Sleepy Skies and Snowdrop WIP by OtakuSquirrel Sleepy Skies and Snowdrop WIP by OtakuSquirrel
I am sooooo running out of time here...

Sleepy Skies's sculpt is finished... I went with the older shorter tail- Cat knows this- it was done for logistical reasons, mainly because I was referencing an older picture of her when I started it, and my quick attempt to do the longer tail broke and was swept away to places unknown by kitty-cats.

Snowdrop's tail is finished... and her mane is making good headway. Primarily, I need to do clean-up on her forelocks and actually sculpt the knot on the back of her mane- the rest is good.

And yeah, I've got one week (holy $&%*#%$&!!!) to finish about 30 ponies... You can see all of Fluttershy and Rarity are in primer-- I'm going to start getting them in paint tonight. After them, it's just AJ and the two special ponies up above-- and yes, I'm about 100% certain I'll be painting their cutie marks at the con- cause that's how far behind I am!

The manes and tails on the sticks are resin copies of my original sculpts- they've been hit with primer to get them ready for painting.
The sculpts on Sleepy and Snowdrop are clay prototypes that I was working on at the time.

I use a silicone rubber to make molds for the pieces I sculpt... Once those are made, I just mix up some resin, inject it, and wait for it to solidify. This makes it sound pretty easy- it's not very easy, but I've gotten a lot of practice at this point, so it's not nearly as hard as it used to be. ;)

If you go into my gallery, I've got a whole folder of pictures related to the molds and resin work stuff...

Hmm. Is silicone rubber sturdy?

It lasts for 30 to 40 castings... then it's pretty much worn out. Less if it's a complicated piece, more if it's pretty basic.

Yup- getting the 3D aspect of this is the tricky part. Don't give up, it just takes some practice to get the hang of it. =)

Well, I think Cat and I are going to be sitting right across from you at EverfreeNW- so *if* I can manage to get them finished on time, you should be able to get a good look at them. =D

What kind of glue do you use to get the dowels onto the manes? @_@ I hated my method bluh

Can't wait till AFTER everfree, when you can try to be sane and rested hahaha

Super glue! I use the kicker (accelerant) to make it dry faster-- typically I put a dab of glue on the kit, spray kicker onto the wood dowel, and then press the dowel firmly onto the spot with the glue. It usually dries in about 5 seconds. Yay! The kicker is usually available at any decent hobby store for $5 to $7 and comes in a tiny spray bottle.

Yeah, I'm running at the point of exhaustion right now with everything I'm trying to accomplish... except for selling off the left-overs, I'm going to take a break from everything as soon as the cons over! I need a vacation from the hobby!

Ohh the kicker would be what i don't have.

As long as you only sell left overs (if there are any lol), no making new ones till you recover!

You can do it! *cheers*

And I guess i missed if you announced before or something, but did you decide these sculpts would be one-offs, or were you gonna do casts for them?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to make molds for them-- they get a bit too fragile after being backed a dozen times, and I don't want them to break and be unrepairable.
