Wild Fire, Sleepy Skies and Snowdrop WIP by OtakuSquirrel Wild Fire, Sleepy Skies and Snowdrop WIP by OtakuSquirrel
My trio of OC ponies that I'm taking to EverfreeNW as gifts as slowly coming along... I really need to get the manes farther along, but that wont matter much if I can't get the ponies themselves all spiffed up.

Wild Fire is :iconsibsy:'s OC
Sleepy Skies is :iconcatwhitney:'s OC
and Snowdrop is :iconmutatingraven:'s OC.

Wildfire and Sleepy are for Cat, Snowdrop is for Raven. Sibsy already has her Wild Fire, but if she's really nice, I'll let her play with some of the other ponies. ;)

Unfortunately I screwed up Sleepy's paint when my protective coat splotched a goober onto her and I tried to wipe it off-- so I've had to restart paint job... But, I've got new one repainted and I'll be working on new eyes and new cutie-marks (for every pony!) tonight. With a bit of luck, I'll get the two of them finished on time...

Those eyes.... so freaking awesome!! You even got Sleepy Skies cute bag line!
I've been thinking of trying to do eyes, but it scares me! But I think my Flower Wishes from the Favorites set would be perfect for Pinkamena as she is a touch darker than Pinkie... but mine came with crazy wonky eyes and I cannot just recolor them. It would bug me too much.

Yeah, I really was proud of Sleepy-- but then I completely botched her up about a half-hour later when I had some paint get wrecked on her body right in the color gradient area... couldn't match the color, so I'm having to start over now. =P

I was super nervous about eyes, but now that I've done a few of them, they really aren't so bad. If anything, just practice practice practice... and if you have some paint remover, just keep using the same pony. ;)

The eyes are way better quality than the official ones. The colors are so clear and crisp, for a minute I thought you had filled them in digitally so the blank sockets wouldn't totally creep us out.

Apple Barrel acrylics-- I use flat white for the base, and then just keep building up on top of that. I usually thin the paint down gown pretty good, so it usually takes several coats to look good, but the thinned-out paint comes out super smooth.

Heh. That's my goal. I usually have a couple other ponies sitting near-by, as well as a reference picture of the pony I'm painting-- all of which I refer to when painting them.

I'd love to be able to do a perfect set of "derped eyes" for when I eventually start working on a Derpy...

Alas, I don't have NEARLY as many ponies to practice on...

Like, I have ONE. ^^;

I wouldn't mind doing a panel one of these days-- but I'd rather do it as part of a group since I honestly still consider myself a beginner at this (I've only been sculpting the manes and tails for about a year, and I can count the number of full-body repaints I've done on one hand...)

i've seen a lot of customs and yours are very good! i'd do more if i was better at painting, my hands are naturally unsteady so it's hard to paint eyes and have them be even. but i might have my boyfriend help me with eyes, so we must learn what you know. lol

Your skill at painting eyes amazes me.

Sleepy's eyes are simply unbelievable. :wow:

Great work, and here's hoping you finish your ponies in time for EFNW. :)

Mind if i pose a quick question? When i do custom ponies, i paint them with as little acrylic paint as possible, and coat them with a light layer of clear polyurethane to make them water resistant. Sometimes, if say the wing bends a bit, the paint may crack and peel away a bit. Is there anything i can do to prevent this?

I'm using an acrylic flat coat over the ponys' bodies-- acrylics usually have some flexibility to them, and I haven't had any problems *yet* with this issue. Wildfire and Sleepy both need their wings man-handled to get their manes on, and so far so good... So maybe look for Krylon Matte acrylic spray? I use their acrylic gloss coat for the manes and tails also.

i must be buying the cheap stuff then. Usually if i use a Glossy paint, like i used on Big Macintosh's hooves, it remains somewhat tacky, as in if i leave it to set for a while, even when totally dry, it will stick to whatever it's touching. Thanks for the Krylon tip!

My attempts always have that dreaded paint brush streak on them...I bought a custom spray can that you can use glitters and acrylic paints in...is that a good air brush alternative.

Sleepy and Wild Fire are airbrushed... which is a super awesome way of keeping them real pretty. Otherwise, I water down the brush applied paints and-- I usually have to put on 3 or 4 coats to get the colors to be consistent (which doesn't always work) but it gives them a really smooth finish.
