Today is August 8th, 2012...  Last year on August 9th, I cut the hair off my first Rainbow Dash and started messing about with some clay.  I had never sculpted anything of merit before this, and to be perfectly honest, my first attempts at sculpting a mane and tail really weren't anything to be too terribly excited about...  on August 10th I posted my first pictures:

I was far from satisfied with my results, but I learned a lot; I learned that one should not depend on derivative works as reference material, and that sculpey can remove cutie-marks if left on them for too long.  I learned that making something show accurate wasn't going to be as easy as slapping some clay on a pony and baking it...

My drive to start this was based in Hasbro's sculpted hair gift set that ominously excluded Rainbow Dash, Rarity and Fluttershy.  The idea of making resin castings of of sculpts came from the many different background ponies who were all color variations of several different designs.

I never did paint my first sculpts for Rainbow Dash-- instead, I decided that to learn more and gain experience, I would tackle the pony I considered to have the simplest hair style- Applejack.  So I took my lessons learned and dove in head first...

Her success led me to Twilight:

But the game changer was Rarity.  Rarity with her curls...  If anyone hasn't browsed my gallery of WIP pictures for Rarity, please go look.  otakusquirrel.deviantart.com/g…
Above everything else, Rarity taught me that anything was possible if I invested enough time and care.  The end results were more than I could have ever hoped for, and were what got me noticed...

Next were Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie...

Oops!  Haha! Wrong Pinkie!  Here's the proper one!

And then I came full circle back to Rainbow Dash...  which was quite fitting if I say so myself...

It's been an adventure from there...  In addition to the Mane Six, I've now got sculpts for the CMC, Daring Do, Pinkamina, DJ-Pon3, Trixie, several OCs, and lots more unfinished ones lined up for the future!

To sum all this up, I want to thank all of you for watching, encouraging, and challenging me everyday.  The Brony and MLP community is a wonderful community and you've all been great.

For those of you who will be at EverfreeNW next week, I very much hope to meet you there.  I'll be sharing a table with Cat Whitney :iconcatwhitney: and we'll be set up directly opposite PixelKitties :iconpixelkitties:, so please come say hi, ask questions, and check out (maybe even buy) some of the ponies!

With my sincerest appreciation,
OtakuSquirrel

Y'know, I'd like to think that, with my one Rarity kit purchase, I've helped contribute to just a small piece to your Grand Galloping Success ;P

Seriously, congrats though~ I wish I could go to EFNW! I would totally buy more ponies :D

It certainly seems like you've had a great adventure so far, and it also seems like it'll only get better from here, what with the con and everything! Best of luck to you, I hope you sell a ton and rake in the cash! ^__^

Hahahahaha oh man what a coincidence. August 12th is the date of my very first pony custom. I didn't post anything until a month later on dA but yeah. It's nearly been an entire year for me as well pony customizing.

Good luck with the con!
